Should You Rent or Buy Ski and Snowboard Gear?

We may earn a commission when you buy through our links. This never affects our editorial verdict.

Renting is usually the sensible choice for first-time visitors, growing children and anyone who travels to the snow infrequently. Buying becomes more attractive when you know what fits, ride regularly and can store and transport equipment safely.

Start with boots. Comfort and correct sizing have a bigger effect on the day than premium skis or a high-end snowboard. Rental shops can exchange uncomfortable equipment, while a specialist boot fitter can make owned boots worthwhile for regular riders.

When comparing rental packages, check whether the price includes a helmet, overnight storage, damage cover and equipment swaps. Booking away from the resort can cost less, but on-mountain hire is convenient when conditions or ability levels change.

Used equipment can offer value, but inspect edges, bases, bindings and age carefully. Bindings may no longer be serviceable even when skis look tidy. Avoid buying a board or skis purely because the discount is large; the wrong size or profile can slow progression.

Clothing is different. A waterproof jacket, pants, gloves and eye protection can be used across multiple trips. Prioritise weather protection and fit, then add premium features only when you understand what you need.

A practical compromise is to own boots, clothing and protective essentials while renting skis or a snowboard. This provides familiar comfort without the cost and hassle of transporting bulky equipment.
